Rainier Family Physical Therapy 750 x 140

One of our co-owners, Susan, has been a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence for a few years. When I was a physical therapy patient, I first met Jaker, a yellow lab. He was a service dog in training helping patients through difficult rehab. I can remember stroking his head as he would visit on the side of the treatment table. Now, almost 2 years later, I will be a puppy raiser too. Actually, Susan and I will be co-raising a puppy.

We recently found out our puppy’s name is Kline. Once you hear the puppy’s name; the reality sets in that yes, the puppy is really ours. We will meet Kline for the first time May 13th. I am very excited and even though Susan has been through this 3 other times, she is just as excited. We have been watching him via webcam and have determined he is quite the boy. I am sure he will entertain our patients with his antics. This should be an interesting experience. So, stay tuned for Kline and his adventures.

We have all been in the situation where we wake up at 5:00 am on a rainy, windy morning and we go out to our car and it won’t start. We go into a panic and don’t know what to do. Well here are a few tips for you to do before you go and spend money on getting your car towed.

5 things to check when your car won’t start:

1.) Check to make sure you have the right key in the ignition. I know it sounds silly, but it can and has happened.

2.) Check to make sure your vehicle is in park before you turn the key over.

3.) Check to make sure that you have enough gas to operate the vehicle.

4.) Check to make sure your battery cables have not come loose. Also, check the battery posts and make sure they aren’t corroded.

5.) Check the ignition switch, it may be worn out.

Rainier Family Physical Therapy 750 x 140

I read in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article Forget rehab, try Nintendo “Wiihab”. The article states that Nintendo’s Wii video game system is becoming the craze in rehab therapy for patients recovering from strokes, broken bones, surgery and even combat injuries.
Using the game console’s unique, motion-sensitive controller, Wii games require body movements similar to traditional therapy exercises. patients become so engrossed mentally; they are almost oblivious to the physical rigor. Many hospitals and physical therapy clinics are using this as a tool in their treatment programs to motivate patients to exercise.

The Wii has been used effectively for many of our patients and they often look forward to it. I remember one patient reporting how sore he was the next day. That was not our intention, but certainly shows that the body gets a good workout.

If you don’t already have a Nintendo Wii, take the plunge and enjoy it as part of your regular exercise program. You can’t go wrong with FUN!

Springerize your Cars!

With Spring now in full force the experts at AAMCO Transmissions of Puget Sound would like to help you all Springerize your cars. Springerizing your car will not only make it run better for you day to day, but it will do so without breaking your wallet. And in an economy like this one, who’s going to argue with that?!

My first tip to Springerize you car is to check your tires. Check the air pressure and of course everyday wear and tear. Ensuring that your tires have the right amount of air pressure in them will help conserve gas. The easier it is for your car to drive on the road, the less power it will use, making it use less gas to perform efficiently.

Since we are on the subject of tires, my next tip is to check your brakes. Mud and debris can easily get caught in your brakes making them work harder ultimately decreasing their life span. We all know how rough of a winter we had this season, so getting your brakes checked before Spring is a good idea to prevent any mishaps from occurring in the months to come.

If you are taking your car in to get the brakes checked, my next tip is to get a tune-up while you’re there. Most experts say that every vehicle should get a tune-up every 30,000 miles in order to keep the vehicle running efficiently. Car experts agree that the people who get their vehicles service regularly enhance the performance of their automobile, thus keeping more dollars in your pocket not only in gas savings, but in future costly repairs as well.

My next tip to Springerize your car is to check all fluids under the hood. If it has been more than 3,000 since your last oil change, it is extremely important to get one ASAP. The life of your engine depends on the oil, so as long as you get your oil changed every 3,000 miles you will be saving money in the end because you will never have to worry about replacing your engine.

While you are under your hood, my next tip is to examine the belts and hoses. You want to check these hoses not only for connection problems, but also plain old wear and tear. Along with examining the belts and hoses, make sure to take a glance at those spark plugs too. Worn out spark plugs can negatively affect how your vehicle burns through fuel.

Now that your car is ready to run properly for Spring all you need to do now is simply clean it up! So get out there and enjoy the beautiful Spring weather, if it ever gets here.

Physical Therapy: Building Bridges of Trust

I first had physical therapy many years ago when a dog practically bit my finger off. Word of advice, never, ever, try and break up a dog fight with your hands! The dog in a fit of aggression cannot distinguish between the hand of the person that feeds it or the dog they are trying to attack. During my physical therapy sessions, I had to learn how to hold a pen, use a fork, and several other things you would never realize that requires the muscles and tendons in the hand. PT and implementing home exercises facilitated a full recovery.

The second time I had physical therapy was after a head on collision that injured my wrist. Once again, I was in the hands of a physical therapist to rehabilitate me back to normal. Different techniques, different injury, different home exercises, but once again, I made a full recovery.
The next time, was for a torn ACL, torn meniscus, and a broken leg. I had two separate stints of physical therapy by three different therapists. Rehab took much longer with these types of injuries and surgeries. I had pre-op therapy to help make me stronger and post-op rehab. I did have complications not attributed to the physical therapy, but from a surgeon’s poor judgment. With home exercises which I still do; I have once again recovered.

There are no prejudices in physical therapy. All walks of life are not immune to the benefits it provides. No one really knows at first how much time you will need to invest in rehabilitation. Doctors don’t really know and I would image don’t give it much thought as it is their job to turn you over to the next set of professionals to help bring you along to recovery. Your physical therapist will determine the length of your treatment based on initial evaluation and your progress. During these sessions week after week, it is sometimes awkward at first, but often a wonderful and surprising relationship that develops between you and your therapist. Your therapist gets to know you on a level many of the people you know do not. They certainly know you better than your doctor because of the time they spend with you. They understand you emotionally and that has a direct effect on your physical recovery. As a patient, you trust your therapist completely. You have your own personal cheerleader and coach. You learn about their families and they about yours. You know their political views, what they like to read, where they eat dinner, and movies they enjoy. You share in the milestones of their children. Your physical therapist becomes an unexpected confidant. Like trust and friendships, we learn that healing takes time.

So, if you ever need physical therapy, just know that you will receive great rewards, in more ways than you ever imagined. Go ahead and build that bridge of trust. It is a positive experience you will not soon forget or regret.
